Reign of the Snow Queen

We survived Yellowstone. And yes, that is frozen hair on the Snow Queen at about -10 degrees F, with the thick morning mists of the geysers graying up the background. For all that have never been there, you must go. Simply put, it's amazing.

But word of advice, avoid July & August -- that's the only other time i've been there, and the crowds at that time of year can be overwhelming in some areas. Not so in winter; it's quite peaceful.

There'll be many pictures and posts to come as soon as the Snow Queen thaws out after her return from D.C. (sadly, had to leave butt-crack early this morning after we flew in late yesterday).

Frosted DC

I was in DC again this past week for meetings for work. On Tuesday night, I was treated to my first snowfall in DC. Being the Floridian that I am, I squealed with delight and took pictures.
The next morning while walking to a meeting, I was treated to seeing the city completely frosted with snow a few inches deep on everything - trees, cars, sidewalks, etc. This did lead to some complications while walking (apparently, I am not meant to drive or walk in snow. Bring on the rain, but snow, no thanks, it's meant to play in and that's it). I was able to get a nice picture of one of the streets that looked like a winter wonderland.
Once I got to the meeting, it was pretty funny to see how my reaction to the snow was so different from those that live in DC. It doesn't snow a whole lot in DC, so when it does, everything seems to grind to a halt while the city tries to deal with it. This results in all sorts of work and hassle for DC residents, while for me, I think "Squeee! Snow!". Likely because I have never had to drive in or shovel snow, so I simply associate it with fun, like this:
After walking in the snow all day, I thought it seemed a waste not to play in it a little before I left. So I found just enough snow outside the apartment to make Mr. Mini Snowman - and it was really fun - the whole time I giggled like I was the Mad Hatter.

Fortunately, I was able to slip out of DC early on Thursday to avoid the major snowstorm that was set to roll in. My original flight for Friday surely would have been cancelled and I wouldn't have made it out until this Tuesday. Eeek, no thanks. This week we're tying up loose ends for our trip and I'm trying to shake a cold I brought back from DC. We leave for Yellowstone on Feb 16th, so we're excited and scurrying around to make sure everything's in order before we leave. True to form, like the Type A Packing Wacko I am, I finished most of my packing this afternoon already. Go ahead and laugh, I did.
